Introduction

Most personality books make a familiar promise: understand yourself and understand other people. Latent Organization starts one step earlier. It looks at a problem hiding inside everyday disagreement. Two people can look at the same thing and disagree about more than the answer. They may not even agree on what matters when they decide.

This book proposes a finite grammar for human determination. Wherever people determine what exists for consideration, how something is done, how it is organized, or what is to be brought about, the distinctions developed here are intended to apply. Any undertaking involving human participation falls within that intended scope.

The same differences appear in private choices, shared work, institutions, inquiry, law, and government. One person may ask what happened. Another may ask whether it was enough. Someone else may ask whether the way it was put together made sense. They may sound like they disagree about everything when they are really answering different questions.

A loose word can hide the difference. People say, “It worked.” “It was successful.” “It was organized.” Each sentence can mean several things at once. Everyday language helps us talk fast, but it can mix up meanings we need to keep apart.

Latent Organization treats sixteen familiar four-letter type addresses, including ISTP, ESFJ, ENFP, and INTJ, as positions in this grammar. Each position identifies a recurring way human activity can be described across the four questions. The addresses are used here to examine organization in general, rather than to sort individual people into sixteen portraits.

The scale of the proposal lies in the relation between a finite inventory and the field it is meant to organize. Like the periodic table, Latent Organization uses a finite set of positions to organize a field far larger than the inventory itself. The comparison is structural: a small, fixed set can provide an order for an enormous range of cases.
